Owning It

“My name is Oma T Harold. I am a housewife." How does that sound? Amidst professionals, I felt small. What "value” did a housewife possess? - Hope you noticed I put value in quote.  What corporate job-related skill did I possess or gain being a housewife? Having spent a couple years on the “job” What career path did being a housewife offer? I felt embarrassed, more so as I compared myself to the people in the room. I used to get nervous every time I had to answer the question "what do you do? I wasn’t comfortable with saying I was a housewife.

There is a certain misconception about House wives. You know, that idea that a housewife just sits at home doing nothing, that she is submissive and dependent on her husband because he determines her fate, that she stays at home “chopping” her husband’s money and birthing children. Shouldn’t a housewife be paid…..hmmmm I find this interesting and I am wondering isn’t the money paid to day cares and crèches for the same job a house wife performs and more?

Do we think there is a figure that would be enough compensation/ payment for all the stuff a housewife does? I am not advocating that every woman should be a housewife. Neither am I implying that being a housewife is better than having a blue collar job or any other job.

Whatever your choice is own it, never apologies or be embarrassed about it.  We all can’t be CEOs, business executives, entrepreneurs’ and what have you. So whatever it is you deicide, always remember that it is your values that define you, not your roles. YOU ARE ENOUGH.
